The Majestic Mount Rushmore!

… let us place there, carved high , as close to heaven as we can, the words of our leaders, their faces, to show posterity what manner of men they were. Then breath a prayer that these records will endure until the wind and rain alone shall wear them away.”

Gutzon Borglum, 1930

Mount Rushmore – Keystone, South Dakota

Tom, Traci and I checked off a big item on our USA bucket list today – Mount Rushmore!!!!!

Over the years I have seen pictures of this amazing feat of engineering, but nothing prepared me for actually seeing this phenomenon. I was overwhelmed by the sense of awe and patriotism that enveloped me as I stood at the park entrance and absorbed the sight and the atmosphere of this place.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is centered on a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the sculpture’s design and oversaw the project’s execution from 1927 to 1941 with the help of his son Lincoln Borglum. The sculpture features the 60-foot (18 m) heads of Presidents George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). These four presidents were chosen to represent our nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation.

The results are Awe Inspiring!

The land was originally part of the Great Sioux Reservation and the Lakota (Sioux) were part of the collaborative process of the design and construction of Mount Rushmore.

We really are here!!!

We stood mesmerized by this incredible achievement!

From the lookout platform, we went to the museum – fascinating!

The museum’s exhibits detailed the thoughts, reasoning, and actual constructing of each section of the monument as well as thoughtful insights about the character and contributions of each president.

After the museum, we strolled around the grounds – beautiful!

Wild! Rugged! Breathtaking!
Two of my very, most favorite people in the world!
A very distinguished mountain goat who resides in the park.

Thomas Jefferson a true Renaissance Man – the author of the Declaration of Independence and the first Ice Cream recipe!!!

Of course, we sampled the ice cream – delicious!

The weather was perfect, the company was perfect, and the monument was amazing!!!

What a wonderful day.
